If like us here at Taste of France you see the deli as the grown-up version of the sweet shop, you’ll be wanting to add Montpellier to the itinerary for your next French trip, as it’s just been revealed as the home of the best deli in the whole of the Hexagon.

Les Cinq Continents, in Le Crès just outside Montpellier, was crowned at the Gourmet Sélection show, held at the Paris Expo at Porte de Versailles at the end of September. The ninth edition of this gourmet event saw 338 exhibitors from around France and abroad showcase their talents, from brewers to chocolatiers to producers of honeys and jams.

This year, 90 establishments took part in the competition for best delicatessen in France which saw them judged on originality, concept, authenticity, ethics and eco-responsible commitments. The top three spots went to:

GOLD: Les Cinq Continents – Le Crès, Hérault

The judges called this an address that allows all gourmets to be advised, surprised and to discover new, exotic and unexpected products. Opened in 2015, it’s an Asian and exotic grocery store where you can find the ingredients to make a real globetrotter of a menu, plus drinks, beers spices and even ready meals from around the world.

SILVER: L’Atelier d’Arôme Voyageur – Tournus, Saône-et-Loire

According to the judges, this is the ultimate return to the origin of the word grocer with a store specialising in spices, peppers and plants.

BRONZE: Le Comptoir de la Gastronomie – Paris

The judges noted the family history behind this traditional establishment and praised its reputation for local know-how and good products. You can also dine in the on-site restaurant.
