Magnum Speedy détouré

Getting to France to replenish your wine cellar is a little tricky right now, but fear not: a specialist wine merchant in the UK can deliver incredible wines from small producers in France direct to your door! Here are our favourite French wines on offer.

Wine specialist Champagnes & Chateaux has been trading in wine since 1989, and is now bringing its exclusive portfolio of quality wines direct to the consumer for the first time.

Managing director and founder Christophe Galez said: “Working with small family-owned producers, our focus has remained the same throughout the 30 years that we’ve been supplying independents and top restaurants. We sell quality wines with great character and individuality, which also represent great value for money.  We pride ourselves on being able to offer outstanding wines that aren’t available in retailers and can now offer consumers an authentic taste of something different via our new online shop with delivery direct to their door.”

New for this year is the highly anticipated release of the final limited-edition Brut Magnum from Champagne House Thiénot (in the past they’ve supplied the Oscars!), which features artwork by renowned French street artist Speedy Graphito. This is the third release in a trilogy, Speedy No1 and Speedy No2 having been released in 2016 and 2018.

Following three years’ ageing in the Champagne & Chateaux cellars at Rue des Moissons, Speedy No3 is a delightful champagne, with a pale-yellow hue tinged with gold. Its powerful nose has hints of pipped-fruit jam, apples and quince and it’s rounded and long on the palate, with a succession of apple and pear fresh-fruit fragrances. With a persistent bead of bubbles and a creamy mousse, this cuvée Thiénot Brut is perfect as an aperitif and pairs beautifully with oysters, shellfish, or fish tartare. It’s made from 45% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir and 20% Pinot Meunier.

In another bold move for Champagne Thiénot, 2019 saw a collaboration with Australian winemaker Penfolds. Three champagnes from the 2012 vintage were released, the result of the combined efforts of Penfolds’ chief winemaker Peter Gago, and Thienot’s Chef de Cave Nicolas Uriel. The three champagnes were made with grapes sourced from vineyards that are highly regarded for their spectacular 2012 vintage.
