LE CHAT NOIR

4907 Wisconsin Ave. NW, Washington, 20016

Rating: The Michelin Plate

What the Michelin inspectors said…

Friendship Heights’ residents are lucky indeed, as the perfect French bistro − Le Chat Noir − is nestled within their quaint neighbourhood. This darling spot embodies the ideal “corner” bistro with its inviting and warm ambience and classic French cooking. It’s not cutting edge, but with a panoply of French hits, who cares?

Pissaladière, typically prepared with flatbread, is literally puffed up here by way of a flaky pastry topped with caramelised onion, herbes de Provence, anchovies and green olives for Mediterranean flavour. Savour the terrific broth of the bouillabaisse before tucking into the merguez aux lentilles, two thin sausage links served with green lentils set atop a salad. Savoury and sweet crêpes are a mainstay of this menu, and brunch is superb.

We want to try…

Le Magret – Moulard duck breast with Niçoise olive polenta, strawberry banyul sauce and an arugula bouquet ($26.95).
