The food hall at the Gare du Sud in Nice has reopened its doors, with a fresh focus on the flavours of the Mediterranean and a promise to put its problems firmly behind it.

The flagship project, in the former railway station in the heart of the Liberation district, has been plagued with difficulties and management problems since it opened in May 2019. It was badly hit by the various lockdowns and saw strikes by restaurateurs over high rents until it was eventually closed in April 2022 for hygiene reasons.

Now City Hall has listened to demands from residents to offer eateries which focus on local cuisine and the food court has been transferred to the management of Renato Iera’s restaurant group, Italian Trattoria.

Nice’s mayor, Christian Estrosi, unveiled the new ‘Mediterraneo’ concept” and promised it would “offer popular, quality cuisine, in a friendly atmosphere and accessible to all”. Once of the problems the food court – the only one in the city – had faced was with its air conditioning: now, according to Mr Estrosi, customers will be kept cool in summer and warm in winter.

The Mediterraneo concept will offer food not just from France, but from across the Med, including Spanish, Greek, Italian and Lebanese. Diners will be able to choose from tapas, pasta and a grill restaurant. Upstairs, a cultural space will host exhibitions and concerts.
