7 things to do along the Vallée de la Gastronomie this summer

Stretching from Dijon to Marseille, the Vallée de la Gastronomie is France’s ultimate gourmet trail – a pleasure-filled route of vineyards, lavender fields, markets and artisan producers. In summer, warm-weather adventures await, from sipping wine in a limestone cave to picnicking under the Provençal sun. Here are just seven unforgettable summer experiences to enjoy…

1. Explore Valence’s market

Every Saturday, stretching from the historic Place des Clercs to the Place de l’Université and the Place des Ormeaux at the foot of the Cathedral, Valence’s much-loved market presents sun-ripened fruit, vibrant vegetables, fresh cheeses and other regional delights. Stroll through the shady squares, chat with artisan producers, or stop to refuel at one of the nearby cafés and restaurants. It’s the perfect start to your gourmet journey.

2. Enjoy a lavender picnic in the Drôme Provençale

At L’Essentiel de Lavande, summer is filled with the heady scent of lavender. This beautiful estate in the Drôme Provençale invites visitors to enjoy an open-air gourmet picnic among swathes of purple. Choose from generous hampers filled with local cheese, seasonal vegetables, local delicacies and wine. It’s a chic way to get back to nature and savour the spirit of Provence.

3. Cycle through organic vineyards in Ardèche

Swap four wheels for two and explore the vineyards of Domaine Notre-Dame de Cousignac, a pioneering organic estate in southern Ardèche. Hop on an electric bike for a guided tour through sun-drenched vines and lavender fields, certified Haute Valeur Environnementale. Learn about the estate’s seven generations of winemaking, then sample their naturally crafted cuvées. Round it all off with a meal on the terrace prepared by the estate’s winegrower/chef, Raphaël Pommier.

4. Taste wine underground at Grotte Saint-Marcel

Beat the summer heat and head below ground at the Grotte Saint-Marcel where, in the cool stillness of a vast limestone cave system, you’ll have a completely unique wine-tasting experience. Led by a sommelier-guide, guests are invited to explore the cave’s natural acoustics and mineral formations before tasting select Rhône Valley wines for a tasting like no other, the darkness enhancing aroma and flavour.

5. Take a vintage wine tour in Beaujolais

Climb aboard a lovingly restored 1964 Volkswagen Combi for a scenic tour through the rolling vineyards of Beaujolais. This experience (available from April to October, except during the harvest) includes a vineyard tour and the chance to sample chilled whites and fruity reds under the sun, accompanied by regional cheeses or charcuterie.

6. Picnic and taste oils at Huilerie Beaujolaise

On the Sentier Victor hiking trail, you’ll find the renowned Huilerie Beaujolaise, which welcomes visitors for tastings of exquisite cold-pressed oils and artisanal vinegars. After a walk or e-bike ride through lush Beaujolais countryside, enjoy a guided dégustation of walnut, hazelnut and pistachio oils alongside balsamic reductions and fruit vinegars. You can also sample honeys, jams, and natural spirits – many of which are exclusive to the estate. Book a picnic hamper in advance and enjoy your discoveries al fresco, shaded by old trees and serenaded by cicadas.

7. Learn the secrets of calissons in Aix-en-Provence

In the Provençal sunshine, visit Roy René to uncover the story of one of France’s most iconic confections: the Calisson d’Aix. At this artisanal factory just outside Aix-en-Provence, you’ll learn how these almond and candied melon sweets are handcrafted using age-old techniques. Visitors can stroll the almond orchards, tour the eco-museum, and of course, taste freshly-made calissons.
