The world’s biggest fondue

It’s a cheese lover’s dream come true: 40 wheels of Comté mixed with gargantuan supplies of white wine and garlic and all melted down into a delicious gloop.

The world’s biggest fondue has been made by Comté cheese specialist JuraFlore at Fort des Rousses in Les Rousses, France. The cheeses, aged for nine, 15, and 21 months, were mixed with Chardonnay and Savagnin white wines, 4.4 lbs of garlic, 3.3 lbs of white pepper, and 121 lbs of cornstarch to achieve the desired creamy texture.

More than 5,000 peopled turned out to witness the record-breaking event and celebrate France’s new title in the world of cheese fondues. The final fondue weighed a mighty 4,800 lbs, beating the previous record of 3,175 lbs set by fondue rival Switzerland in 2009.

Jean-Charles Arnaud, president of Fromagerie Arnaud JuraFlore, said of the friendly feud with their Swiss neighbours: “We share the same mountain, but we can’t tolerate them holding the record any longer!”

The immense dipping feast was prepared by 300 people using a gigantic copper cauldron, with the cheese mixture carefully churned using an oversized food processor to ensure a smooth finish. An adjudicator from the Guinness World Records oversaw the event, officially certifying the new record.

JuraFlore, a brand of Fromageries Arnaud based in the Jura department of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, is well known for its production and ageing of Comté.
