101 metres – the world’s longest sausage galette

In a remarkable culinary feat, Brittany’s capital city of Rennes has set a new world record for the longest galette-saucisse, aka the traditional Breton delicacy of a sausage wrapped in a buckwheat pancake.

The galette-saucisse measured an astounding 101m, surpassing the previous record of 53m established in Mayenne in 2021. It involved 500 galettes, each measuring 30cm in diameter. This effort, witnessed by 1,000 spectators, was part of the Breizh Trip crowdfunding campaign, which aims to tour the European festivals making galettes-saucisses as well as doing its bit to combat food poverty by distributing meals to people in need.

The galette-saucisse holds a cherished place in Breton society, often associated with communal gatherings and local events. Its significance is particularly pronounced in relation to the Stade Rennais Football Club, where it has become an emblematic match-day snack, the aroma of grilled sausages wrapped in warm galettes filling the stadium as supporters chant, “Galette-saucisse, je t’aime!”

The formation of the Association de Sauvegarde de la Galette-Saucisse Bretonne in 1994 underscores the status of this simple snack as a cultural icon. The association advocates for the use of quality ingredients and respect for traditional preparation methods, ensuring that the galette-saucisse remains a beloved feature of Breton cuisine.
