The Baron’s Blog October 2025 – Armagnac – Vintages & Blends for Glorious Gifting
As the corn-ripe summer sun slowly ebbs to an autumnal shade of shortbread and its potent rays dial down to winter setting, so thoughts in Armagnac turn increasingly to distillation and the fast-approaching festive season.
The Baron de Sigognac’s distillatory journey has previously been documented in Taste of France but is, nonetheless, worth a solid nod, as it is during this creative period that many of the best celebratory & holiday gifting ideas condense!
In the medieval cellars at Domaine de Bordeneuve, the Baronial residence and ancient site of artisanal eau-de-vie production, lie myriad qualities of previous years’ distillations ; vintages, XOs, XXOs and all manner of rare blends repose on the traditional beaten-earth floors, maturing gracefully in French oak barrels, or slumbering in dark glass demi-johns, just waiting for an excuse to be hand-bottled.
Armagnac is, arguably, the only spirit in the world to offer such a superlative selection of qualities and years. One might imagine this choice to be confusing or overly complicated, yet nothing could be further from the truth. Broadly speaking, Armagnac can be separated into two sections: Vintages & Blends.

Vintages are pretty much self-explanatory: Armagnacs issued from one single year of grape harvest & distillation. The Baron himself has an impressive collection of single vintages in his cellars ranging from present day back until the early 1800s.
The process of distillation removes any and all impurities and brings harmony to the overall profile. As such, and unlike wine, there are no bad vintage Armagnacs per se and selection is, therefore, a matter of personal taste or event to be celebrated.
If your preference is lightly spiced with gentle cinnamon notes, candied tropical fruits with mellifluous toffee undertones or snappy dark chocolate, Sichuan pepper and tobacco for those ‘red leather chair’ moments, then your local specialist stockist will happily advise you on a suitable vintage.

If not, just send a mail to [email protected] and I will gladly help you make the right selection.
Armagnac Blends are simply predefined age expressions, assembled from a collection of different vintages:
For example, an ‘Hors d’Âge’ (a.k.a. XO or 10 year old), represents several different vintages, the youngest of which is, by law, 10 years old.
The same logic applies to all blended age statements, ranging from the 2 year old (VS or ***), up to an 100 year old.
In spite of his vast collection of vintages, the Baron de Sigognac does have a particular penchant for the blended Armagnacs, as they require generationally-accrued know-how to get ‘just so’ and master-blending a VS is a particularly fine piece of artistry!
One might even say that such ancient mastery is the very origin of modern mixology…
Added to that, Blends also adapt beautifully well to the widest range of palates, thus making them perfect and original, gifting ideas… So, all one really needs to know is which blended Armagnac best suits personal tastes or specific occasions:
VS (also ***): light and easy to drink; perfect for cocktails and myriad culinary applications.

VSOP: 4 years minimum in French oak; merits its place in a snifter whilst also mixing magnificently into any premium cocktail.
Napoléon: 6 years minimum cellaring bring wonderful notes of cocoa, orange zest and rich vanilla… a firm favourite!
10 YO (XO or Hors d’Âge): serious minimum ageing, still with plenty of freshness, for this most adaptable of all ‘age statements’; a real crowd-pleaser!
11 – 100+ YO Blends: a question of budget and palate. In general, the greater the age, the more complex the profile and the higher the price.
That said, the Baron’s own Sigognac 15, 20 & 25 year old Blends represent exceptionally good value, above all, when compared to equivalent ages & qualities of craft whisky, rum or cognac.
There, you see? Nothing too complicated at all!
So, as distillation approaches in our wonderful region, let your own thoughts also turn to amazing Armagnac for the coming festive season and glorious gifting!
