Rhum Barbancourt
The Story of Rhum Barbancourt – Haiti’s World-Renowned Rum House
For more than 160 years, Rhum Barbancourt has stood as one of Haiti’s most iconic and internationally respected brands. Founded in 1862 by Dupré Barbancourt, a Frenchman from the Cognac-producing region of Charente, the company has built a global reputation for producing premium rum using traditional craftsmanship, exceptional sugar cane, and methods inspired by fine French cognac production.

Unlike many commercial rum producers that use molasses, Barbancourt creates its rum from pure sugar cane juice, giving the spirit a fresher, more refined and aromatic profile. The company is particularly famous for combining Caribbean rum-making traditions with the “méthode charentaise” double distillation process commonly associated with cognac production in France. This distinctive approach, together with ageing in French Limousin oak barrels, has helped Barbancourt become recognised as one of the finest rum producers in the world.

The business began in Port-au-Prince before relocating in the mid-20th century to a larger distillery site surrounded by sugar cane fields in the Plaine du Cul-de-Sac region of Haiti. This move allowed the company to significantly expand production and begin exporting its rums internationally. Today, Barbancourt products are sold across Europe, North America and the Caribbean, helping showcase Haitian craftsmanship on a global stage.

Over the decades, the company has remained family-owned, passing through several generations of the Gardère family. Current leadership under Delphine Gardère has focused on modernising the brand while preserving its historic identity and production methods. In recent years, the company has refreshed its packaging, expanded international distribution and invested in research and development, all while maintaining the traditional character that has defined Barbancourt since the 19th century.
Barbancourt’s portfolio includes several celebrated expressions, including its 4-year-old, 8-year-old and 15-year-old rums, each offering increasingly rich complexity and oak character. Rum enthusiasts frequently praise the brand for its balance of grassy sugar cane notes, citrus, vanilla, spice and oak, with many reviewers considering the 8-year and 15-year bottlings among the best value premium aged rums available.

Beyond rum production, Barbancourt has also played an important social and economic role within Haiti. The company has long supported local employment, agriculture and community initiatives through the Barbancourt Foundation. Despite facing significant challenges over the years — including political instability, natural disasters and ongoing security issues in Haiti — the distillery has continued operating and remains a symbol of resilience and national pride.
Today, Barbancourt continues to embody Haitian heritage, craftsmanship and excellence. Combining centuries-old techniques with a modern international outlook, the brand has secured its place as one of the Caribbean’s most respected and distinctive rum producers.
