Brittany

At the heart of Breton cuisine are the iconic crêpes and galettes. While sweet crêpes are enjoyed throughout France, Brittany’s savoury buckwheat galettes are a regional specialty. The “Complet” – a galette filled with ham, cheese, and egg – is a beloved staple. Equally famous is the Kouign-Amann, a buttery pastry whose name means “butter cake” in Breton, reflecting the region’s love affair with its prized salted butter.

Brittany’s extensive coastline provides an abundance of seafood, with Cancale oysters being particularly celebrated. These briny delicacies are often enjoyed with a dollop of seaweed butter, marrying land and sea flavors. For those with a sweet tooth, Far Breton, a dense flan-like cake studded with prunes, and Caramel au Beurre Salé (salted caramel) offer a taste of Breton indulgence.

No meal in Brittany is complete without a glass of local cider. This effervescent apple beverage comes in various styles, from sweet to dry, and perfectly complements the region’s savoury galettes. For a unique aperitif, visitors can sample Chouchen, a traditional mead-like drink made from fermented honey.
